The Dave Brubeck Octet (1946-1953)
The Dave Brubeck Octet pioneered early innovations in the use of counterpoint, polytonality, and polyrhythms in jazz. Also known as "The Jazz Workshop Ensemble" and "The Eight," the group was formed by Dave Brubeck and his fellow graduate students studying at Mills College in Oakland, CA, under French composer, Darius Milhaud. Initially formed as a rehearsal group to practice each other's compositions, the group later added other local Bay Area musicians, including Paul Desmond. The musicians from this early group continued to collaborate with Brubeck throughout his career, including several who went on to become Dave Brubeck Trio and Quartet members like Paul Desmond, Cal Tjader, Ron Crotty, and Bill Smith.
